News Release
Opposition Regarding Speed Limit Reduction
August 8, 2005
Recently, Manvel
Police Chief Ralph Garcia requested that City
Council consider reducing speed limits within
the City Limits of Manvel. This was due to
several reasons such as population growth, an
increase in traffic activity, bicycle activity
and citizens walking or running along Manvel
roadways. For so long, Manvel speed limits have
been posted approximately 10 M.P.H. above most
city roadways and until now this has not been a
safety issue. It is not out of the ordinary to
see persons from local bicycle clubs utilizing
S. Masters and other Manvel roadways to practice
for upcoming major events such as the M.S. 150.
Many of Manvel roadways are narrow and have no
shoulders. This poses a serious threat to
someone enjoying a bike ride, walk, or run in
Manvel. Additionally, motorists experiencing car
trouble, have no way to safely pull off onto a
shoulder.
